Figuring Out Inventory as a New Seller
When I first started selling, most of my inventory came from my own collection. I went through cards I didn’t really care about, comics I had doubles of, or books I had just grown out of. That part was easy. But once those were gone, I hit a wall. I started asking myself, how do I keep getting new inventory without burning through money?
Where I’ve Been Getting Inventory
So far, I’ve tried a bunch of different ways to keep things moving.
Whatnot Breaks: These are fun and fast. Sometimes you hit big, sometimes you end up with a bunch of base cards and nothing too exciting.
eBay Auctions: I’ve been able to score a few good deals and flip some cards for profit, but competition is tough and the margins can be small.
Hobby Boxes: These are probably the biggest gamble. You might spend a few hundred dollars hoping for a great pull, but often you end up making less than you spent. It’s exciting, but risky.
The Tough Part: Staying Profitable
The challenge is keeping inventory fresh while also making smart buys. Boxes are fun to rip, but most of the time you’re lucky to break even. And while sniping eBay auctions or jumping into breaks can work sometimes, it’s not always consistent.
Trying New Ideas
Right now, I’m experimenting with different ways to stay stocked up.
I’ve been looking into buying small collections or lots where I can pick out the better pieces and sell the rest as bundles.
I’m trying to focus on players and characters I actually know well. That way, I feel more confident in what might go up in value.
I’ve also been digging through cheap bins at shows and shops, trying to find stuff I can resell for a little extra.
And I’m thinking more about timing — like having inventory ready when a player heats up or when con season brings in more interest.
Still Learning
I’m not an expert. I’m still figuring things out, and I’ve made some mistakes. But I want to share what I’ve learned so far and maybe hear what’s working for other sellers too.
If you’re selling cards or comics, how are you finding good inventory? What’s worked for you?
